Gerri Davis

Gerri Davis (born 1985) is a painter living and working in New York.
Davis was born near Nasa Road One in Houston TX and attended the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham AL, and The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Her large, complex oil paintings primarily address temporo-spatial conundrums that follow threads developed throughout the history of art. The 2009 painting Bordel marked the end of a period of inquiry into the work of Pablo Picasso. In an edition of etchings titled Reflections of What Men Have Seen, Mirrored in the River of What They Have Never Been Able to See, she created a series of prints expanding on themes that artists have used to describe the human condition (Death, the Harvest, the Kiss, etc.) More recently her Annunciation (2013) articulates the oft-painted motif from an unprecedented vantage in which the viewer embodies a deity gazing down on the Virgin Mary's internal conflict. This richly colored work depicts various times, similar to cubist compositions, but blends them together into a smooth, continuous image.
In his 2012 Review of Davis's first solo exhibition, Charlie Finch, co-author of [http://books.google.com/books/about/Most_art_sucks.html?id=4oBPAAAAMAAJ Most Art Sucks: Five Years of Coagula (Smart Art Press)], wrote, "Despite her gifts, Gerri’s work still leaves me disturbed, because she pares away the figure, often herself, with the relentless neurosis of Giacometti." with the artist, Lawrence Weschler states, "...far more than in any other self-portrait I am aware of, you are asking us, or requiring us, to momentarily inhabit your eyeballs, both of them, to identify with you in your act of looking as if it was our own. This “you-me” thing being the essence of the work."
