Gerald Michael Vezendy (born 13 Dec 1942 in Berwick, Pennsylvania, died 21 Jan 2004), also known as "Jerry" or "Gerry", was a rookie pitcher with the Boston Red Sox franchise in 1965. Vezendy attended University of Maryland, where he set a record and led the Atlantic Coast Conference in the category of strikeouts per 9 innings for 3 consecutive years. The Red Sox optioned Vezendy to Toronto's AAA team, and later cut him, at which time the Cardinals picked him up. He never played in the Major League, to the surprise of some of the Red Sox players, who thought he would be in the first rotation in 1965 after the spring training in Scottsdale,. This was done under what was called the bonus rule, a process of promoting, optioning, selling, and cutting players; that was replaced the following year by the current Rule 4 draft system.
