Artist Statement

This collection of images is an exploration into memories that are projected onto us by particular environments of historical and emotional significance.
It looks at how we immortalise events into memorials - how we lock certain events into a frozen place and time.
These memorials are places to mourn and remember events that no longer exist - when we visit them our minds imagine and overlay mental photographs of what the event might have looked like. We are taken back into a time and place which is new yet old. We think we catch a glimpse, and then it is gone. It is again just a place, like any other.
These images were captured in various locations around Germany. The hand-written transcripts are testimonies from survivors of The Holocaust, and were provided by the Sydney Jewish Museum in conjunction with The Institute for Visual History and Education, University of California.
