Gasthaus Gutenberger was a famous authentically German restaurant in Winnipeg, located on 2583 Portage Avenue, and founded by a chef named Kurt Wagner who born in either 1949 or 1950 in Laubach. The restaurant was in the style of an Austrian/Swiss/German Alp chalet and was founded in 1995. It served a wide selection of German food. Its last owner was Jereme Labelle. Aside from the restaurant at the German Society of Winnipeg building on Charles Street, it was Winnipeg's only German restaurant and was well known for its good food. It was named one of the top dining experiences in Winnipeg. It closed extremely unexpectedly in around June 2016 with zero notice. Despite it being a famous restaurant, nothing was announced on the news, the restaurant's website, or anywhere on the internet. Also nothing was told on why it closed and its permanent closure shocked many. |
