Garbage Man Day is an unofficial holiday that is celebrated in the United States on June 17. It was created to show appreciation for workers in the waste management industry as well as to bring awareness to proper garbage disposal methods, including recycling and disposal of hazardous waste materials. National Garbage Man Day was started in 2013 by John D. Arwood, CEO of Arwood Waste, Inc. He encouraged communities to show their appreciation for their local garbage collectors in various ways, including making greeting cards, donating baked goods, wearing supporting t shirts, and calling their local providers to show their support. In 2014 a "Wall of Honor" was added to acknowledge individuals who have contributed to the waste industry. The original slogan of National Garbage Man Day was "Love Your Garbage Man," however it raised suspicion within various groups in its lack of acknowledgement of women's roles in the waste industry. In 2014 National Garbage Man Day added to the slogan "Keeping You and the Environment Safe". The logo was also changed, to reflect the diversity of both men and women who work as garbage collectors.
