Gaelscoil na mBeann

Gaelscoil na mBeann is a bilingual primary school that uses Irish Gaelic as it's primary medium of instruction.
History
Gaelscoil na mBeann was established in 2010 by a group of local people and parents who wanted Gaelic-Medium Education for their children. It's founders had a clear vision for the education they wanted and the whole school community has worked tirelessly to make their vision a reality. The school gained recognition and funding from the Department of Education in 2012. The school is situated in the heart of Kilkeel, beside it's feeder pre-school, Naíscoil na mBeann.
Ethos
It is the ethos of Gaelscoil na mBeann that we welcome children and families from all backgrounds in a school in which diversity is not only tolerated but indeed celebrated.
Aims
The school aims;
* to ensure that Gaelscoil na mBeann is a happy and fulfilling place wherein all pupils can flourish;
* to create positive relationships between pupils, staff, parents and all members of the school community;
* to instil in pupils a respect for the dignity and rights of others regardless of race, gender or religious beliefs;
* to provide a high standard of Irish-medium education to every child and to ensure that they achieve their full potential;
* to develop our children’s individual and collective potential emotionally, morally and socially;
* to provide opportunities for extra-curricular activities such as sport, drama, music competitions and trips.
Curriculum
Following on from the strong foundation of the pre-school, the benefits of bilingualism are carried through
to primary school level, where the children are encouraged to build upon their existing vocabulary and
skills and develop them within the Northern Ireland curriculum. English is a key part of the curriculum and
is introduced at Primary 3. This ensures that the attainment of the children is equal and comparable to
children in English-medium schools. All subjects in the curriculum are studied through the medium of Irish
and the children are encouraged by teachers to progress on an individual basis in their learning experience.
