Early Life Gabriel Rojas Hruska (14 March 1893 - 26 July 1957), the inventor of surround sound, was born in Stockholm, Sweden. Son of Francesco Rojas DeMantiguo, and Rosalinda Stepan Jaroslava Hruska, Gabriel showed an interest in physics at a young age. Education & Invention of the Surround Sound System At 18, Gabriel was enrolled into Stockholm University, majoring in physics. His studies in engineering led to a six year societal hiatus, in which he had a great interest for electronics and sound, ultimately leading to the creation of the first surround sound system. During his studies, he studied the physics of sound to a great extent developing various theories and many surround sound system prototypes. While attending the Stockholm University, at the age of 20, Gabriel met his future spouse, Edna Håkansson in 1913. The two married many years later in 1920. The first prototype of the surround sound system was created in 1921. During his later years in university, shortly after meeting Edna, he was the owner of an electronics shop in the downtown area of Stockholm. Although the business was lucrative and successful, it disbanded in 1919. This led to a drastic career change for the entrepreneur. Death During the mid 1950's, Gabriel was in very bad health and suffered from depression, due to bankruptcy, ultimately dying in his home in 1957 after an overdose of penicillin. Left behind were a number of blueprints and rough designs found in his home, for the prototypes of his surround sound design. Gabriel Rojas Hruska is currently buried in Skogskyrkogården (also known as The Woodland Cemetery).
