FrostMUD is a free MUD, MUSH and MOO hosting service. In addition to its primary services, it also offers free Web hosting, Eggdrop, Psybnc, and Linux shells. It is only possible for people within the continental US (USA, Canada, and Mexico) to request an account. History FrostMUD came on-line in 1998. It is owned and operated by Matt Swanner, of Alaska, USA. Both the server and Matt are now located in Fort Mill, South Carolina. When FrostMUD first opened its doors, the web address was frostmud.dyndns.org. Since then, through the generous donations of users and paid members, the server has been able to acquire it's own domain name, located at (www.)frostmud.com. Purpose Matt himself states his reasoning for starting these services goes back to the early days of the internet, when Dial-up Internet access was rampant and expensive; site hosting costs and bandwidth were also extremely costly, and many games or miscellaneous activities were only available on a pay-for-play basis. The popularity of IRC and MUD-type games was increasing at this time (because they were free), as were the number of people looking for cheaper hosting alternatives to start-up their own text-based games or chat servers. His goal was to create the best free service for these types of activities. Donation Scheme FrostMUD has always maintained a basic, free service with generous allotments of disk space and machine time with minimal restrictions in place (compared to other free shell services). Users wanting a more robust plan, may donate in order to use more system resources. The donation scheme is tiered, with Bronze being a free account, going up to Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each step up the ladder offers considerably more storage space, RAM allotment, CPU allotment and ports. Rules
