As France outlawed the denial of Armenian genocide perpetrated by Turkey, Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, accused France of genocide for the massacre of Algerian civilians before and during the Algerian War. Supposed genocide against Algerians According to Prime Minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, 15 percent of Algerian population was subjected to massacre from 1945. Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants French President, Nicolas Sarkozy to, recognize that as a genocide as Algerians were burnt en masse in ovens and were martyred mercilessly. According to the Algerian documents, 350,000 to 1.5 million Algerians died during Algerian War of Independence. British historian, Alistair Horne, also supports the claims of Algerians and states in his book that 10% of total population of Algeria was killed by French Army. Algerians argue that, the massacre should be named as 'genocide' and that France should apologize to the Algerians. These claims are backed by Turkey, and Muslim countries including Arab states. Criticism France leave the analysis of the role of France in this massacre to historians. In words of ex-French president Jacques Chirac, "Writing history is the job of the historians, not of the laws." According to ex-French prime minister Dominique de Villepin, "speaking about the past or writing history is not the job of the parliament." Critics are viewing these allegations of French genocide against Algerians as a retaliation attempt by Turkey against France, as French National Assembly passed a bill in the Lower House criminalising the denial of the 1915-1916 Armenian Genocide by Turkey lately.
