Denman was a 1951 graduate of the United States Military Academy and was serving as a lieutenant in the US Army when he was selected for the Olympics. He finished sixth in the individual event, the best result for the American competitors, and was part of the US team that finished fourth in the team event, the other team members being Thad McArthur and Guy Troy. Denman was the youngest of the three team members, all of whom were military personnel; the three were brought together for a reunion in 2017.
