Fred Harms

Fred Harms (*born May 27, 1965 in Wilhelmshaven) is a German professor for Healthcare Management and Translational Research. He completed his MD / PHD in tumor immunology and oncology from 1986-1996 at the private University of Witten-Herdecke (Germany), the University of Muenster (Germany), the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX (USA) and the University of Bangkok (Thailand).
Curriculum vitae
From 1997 to 1999 he was Lecturer (Ass. Prof.) for Innovation Management in Life Sciences at the Technical University of Darmstadt (Germany), from 2000 to 2004 Lecturer (Ass. Prof.) for Healthcare Management at the Technical University in Berlin (Germany), from 2005-2007 Lecturer (Ass. Prof.) for Healthcare Business Management at the University of Hamburg (Germany), from 2008 to 2009 Scientific Director for Pharmaceutical Business Management at the Center for Management and Quality in Healthcare at the Danube University Krems (Austria), from 2010 to 2012 Chairman of the Center for Management and Quality in Healthcare at the Danube University Krems (Austria) and Dean's Professor of Health Care Management at Mayes College of Healthcare Business and Policy at the University of Philadelphia, PA (USA). Since 2013 he is heading together with Prof. Dr. Dorothee Gänshirt the Institute for Health Communication and Healthcare Management (Versorgungsforschung) at the Sigmund-Freud-Private-University in Vienna (Austria).
In addition to his university work, he was Director of Oncology and Global Project Manager at the Merck KGaA in Darmstadt (Germany), respectively Imclone NY (USA) from 1996-2002. He was responsible for the development of Erbitux, a chimeric monoclonal antibody for the treatment of colorectal cancer. From 2002-2003 he acted as Vice-President of OncoScore (Novartis-Venture) and Consiliarius of the tumor bank of the Basel University Hospital (Switzerland), from 2004-2014 member of the Executive Board of the Health Care Competence Center (HC3) in Basel (Switzerland) and since 2016 founder and member of the Executive Board of Beneganic Organic Vitamins in Zurich (Switzerland).
Scholarships / Academic Distinctions
From 1997-1991 Fred Harms was a scholarship holder for High Potentials in Life Sciences at the Hoechst AG Frankfurt (Germany), from 1992-1994 he was a scholarship holder at the educational fund of the chemical industry at the Henkel AG Düsseldorf (Germany), from 2005-2006 a research scholar at Merck, Sharp & Dohme Foundation, Whitehouse Station, NJ (USA). In 2010, together with Dorothee Gänshirt he received a letter of honor from the European Commission in Brussels (Belgium). In 2012, as well as 2016, Fred Harms and Dorothee Gänshirt received the Certificate of Honour from the International Prevention Organization in Brussels (Belgium) for exceptional scientific achievements in the prevention of vascular diseases.
Research focus
The Institute for Health Communication and Healthcare Management (IGV) at the Sigmund-Freud-Private-University in Vienna (Austria) works in cooperation with the European Health Care Foundation (EUHCF) in Zurich (Switzerland) with emphasis on the following areas:
(i) the development of strategies for the prevention, compliance and disease management of chronic diseases, and (ii) the assessment of potential benefits of medical innovations for patient care. The vision of the Institute for Health Communication and Healthcare Management (Versorgungsforschung) and the European Health Care Foundation is the development of evidence-based concepts to improve the care of people with chronic diseases. One example is the “Patientfox (Patientenfuchs)”; It is the first self-management online platform for chronic diseases in Europe. A further objective is the establishment of a pan-European network of all stakeholders in healthcare. The Institute for Health Communication and Healthcare Research are creating in cooperationwith the European Health Care Foundation (EUHCF) a platform that will advance the implementation of evaluated healthcare concepts in Europe.
