Franco Marx

Hermanus Frans (Franco) Marx (born 29 November 1985) is a South African politician and lawyer. He is currently the elected Ward Councilor for Ward 39 in the Polokwane Local Municipality and the Caucus Leader for the Democratic Alliance in Polokwane.
Early life, education and career
Early life and family
Franco was born in the Pietersburg Provincial Hospital in the erstwhile city of Pietersburg, renamed to Polokwane in 2005. His father, Manie Marx is an auctioneer, estate agent and professional valuer in Polokwane with the firm Eli Stroh Property Services. His mother, Tertia Marx, was a primary school teacher at Noordskool Primary School, Polokwane.
Franco married his wife, Cloutelle Marx (née Van den Berg) on the 22 March 2014. They have two sons, Marnus (born July 2015) and Danru (born February 2017).
Education
Marx went to Noordskool Primary School for his primary education where after he matriculated from Pietersburg High School (PHS) in Polokwane during 2003.
Franco further his studies at the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher education (now North West University, Potchefstroom) where he earned a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree in 2007.
Career
On obtaining his degree in 2007 he started his clerkship in law (articles) with the firm Henstock van den Heever, Polokwane in 2008. He passed all four of the articles examinations during the year 2008 and was admitted as an attorney on 23 February 2010 by the North Gauteng High Court of South Africa.
He stayed with Henstock and practiced as an attorney with them as from the date of his admission. He was subsequently admitted as a Conveyancer on 8 November 2012 and a Notary Public on 21 June 2013. Franco also obtained his Certificate in terms of Section 4(2) of the Right of Appearance in Courts Act 62 of 1995 allowing him to appear as an attorney in any of the High Courts of South Africa.
On 1 September 2015 he left his erstwhile employer to practice for his own account under the name and style of Franco Marx Attorneys based in Polokwane.
Political career
Marx started his political career when joined the Democratic Alliance and participated as their candidate in a by-election for Ward 20, Polokwane. The by-election was held on 13 August 2014 and Marx won with 1219 votes (64.81%) against the ANC candidate, Noah Mamabolo who obtained 662 votes. The DA support in Ward 20 increased from 47% in 2011 to 64% in the by-election.
Following a demarcation process, a new Ward 39 was created in Polokwane and Franco was nominated to stand as the DA candidate. Franco successfully won Ward 39 during the 2016 local governent election.
The 2021 Local Governent Elections took place om 1 November 2021 following various uncertainties and even court applications due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Franco retained his seat as the Ward 39 Councillor.
With the passing of long-standing Councillor in Polokwane, Frank Haas, on 31 August 2021, Franco was elected as the Polokwane Democratic Alliance Caucus Leader with Cllr Jacques Joubert as the Polokwane DA Whip.
