Fotkipus

The Fotkipus (pronounced Foht-kah-puh-s) is a cartoon image. The original image is that of a yellow, egg-shaped, camera-eyed, octopus.

The Fotkipus first appeared on the Internet in May 2007. It was entered in a contest to find a mascot for a web site named Fotki. There were twelve entries in that contest. The Fotkipus finished seventh. The proprietors of Fotki opted not to use any of the entries for their official mascot.

Although many believed that the Fotkipus was the best of the mascots entered, the dubious looking octopus did not match the contest description, which stated: “Base Fotki mascot on an image of animal, a hare or a rabbit (who can tell the difference?), and possibly one enjoying carrot(s).” However, Fotkipus’ owner contended, in his description that accompanied the image, that Fotki would not “want to be a member of the Just Another Rabbit Mascot club (JARM),” like “Bugs Bunny, Crusader Rabbit, Briar Rabbit, the Easter Bunny, Ricochet Rabbit, the Trix are for kids rabbit, Watership Down rabbits, the Energizer Bunny, Rabbit (from Winnie the Pooh), and last but not least, the Playboy bunny.”

Over time, variations in the Fotkipus’ color scheme and numerous satirical characterizations have created a collection of fotkipi (plural for fotkipus), and even an evolutionary change into fotkipoids.

Not one to be complacent in defeat, the Fotkipus seeks its own place in the history of useless inventions like the pet rock. The Fotkipus’ hero is the dramatic gopher on You Tube.

The word “Fotki” is Russian for little photo, and the web site Fotki offers photo hosting, as well as photo print photos, and a variety of social functions such as photo contests. Note that the Fotkipus has no commercial interests and has no association with the Fotki photo service whatsoever.
