Flightradar24.com (formerly Flygradar.nu) is a website founded in 2007 by Svenska Resenätverket AB. The page uses the transponder signals from aircraft received by Secondary Surveillance Radars (SSRs) to plot current air traffic on a map with information about altitude, speed and destination.
Description
Flightradar24 plots the response from aircraft fitted with ADS-B transponders. The ADS-B technique is only installed in around 60% of current commercial aircraft which means that only aproportion of traffic is displayed on Flightradar24, with the majority of units fitted in large airliners. The signals from the aircraft are received by receivers all over the world.
Flightradar24 uses the two most popular ADS-B-receivers in the world witch is the SBS-1 from Kinetic Avonics and AirNav from AirNav Systems.
Flightradar24 have around 100 receivers connected to the network today.
Devolopment
In 2007, the site was founded by Svenska Resenätverket AB, with very limited coverage in the beginning and only available for part of northern Europe.
In 2009 the new network, witch is in use today, was introduced and receivers all over the world was able to connect.
In July 2010 an Flightradar24 iOS-application was released.
Consequences of the volcano eruption in Iceland
Flightradar24.com geot international attention during the 2010 eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull when many newspapers and TV-channels used the site to show the actual situation in the airspace above Europe. The number of visitors increased exponentially during the eruption and the visitor record is 1 166 000 unique visitors in April 20, 2010. The servers weren't dimensioned for this extremly amount of visitors and the site went down several times during the eruption.
