Fight the Pipe is an organisation based in Wales and England that opposes the construction of a 197-mile natural gas pipeline by National Grid. The pipeline is intended to run from Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire to Tirley in Gloucestershire, through two national parks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The gas is to be imported from Qatar. Many are concerned at the experimental nature of the pipeline and the apparently glib attitude of National Grid to safety and environmental concerns. At Trebanos, only concerted local pressure prevented the company blasting near residential land that was riddled with old mine workings, prompting fears of a repeat of a landslide that engulfed a Welsh school in the 1950s. Others are unhappy at how the planning process was subverted. When permission was refused at local level, and then by the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff, National Grid were forced to get a diktat from the British government at Westminster. A protest camp was established at Penpont, near the town of Brecon, in the autumn of 2006, along the pipeline route. The camp was evicted in June 2007, and some protestors were charged with offences related to the occupation.
