A fancy phone is a term created to describe mobile phones of the next generation which besides being smart and useful nowadays are also toys, tools of recreation and expression of lifestyle at the same time. The term fancy phone, like web 2.0, does thereby not denote new technical specifications, but tries to capture a development of phones that cumulated to such an extend that simply a new expression was needed. According to common knowledge and rumors the term can be traced back to Peter Meißner, a political scientist at the University of Konstanz, who persistently claimed that smart is not capturing anymore correctly the capabilities and services provided by high end phones nowadays. Instead he argues that the essence of those phones is to be fancy, hip, up-to-date and that most things done with these smart aka fancy phones is more connected to leisure time and convenience than smartness in such a way that one simply has to love them once having played around with a fancy phone.
