Famous Army Stores Ltd.
Based in Garston Liverpool, was a major independent retailer of camping equipment, outdoor clothing footwear and army surplus. Was a 200 strong store chain, with a turnover of £50 million, sadly placed into administration. The then Directors of Graham Smith Steve Jowitt John Nash and Keith Murray tried in vain to buy the company whilst in administration, although submitting the highest offer and trying to keep most of the chain, the preferred bidder and eventual owner was its arch enemy, blacks leisure group, they acquired 47 stores and all of the stock. Blacks retained all of the staff from the 47 stores, most of the managers left the business as the stores were being branded millets or blacks.
