Fake Metal

Fake Metal is a disparaging term used to refer to a variety of Rock music bands that claim to play a form of Heavy Metal music.
After the birth of Heavy Metal in the 1960's, the genre achieved a reputation of being rebellious and "dangerous". Thus, many bands, hoping for some notoriety, have styled themselves as being "Heavy Metal", despite the fact that their music is quite clearly not part of the genre of Heavy metal.
Notable "Fake Metal" bands include(from the 1970's): KISS, Van Halen; (from the 1980's) Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses; from the 1990's) Korn, Limp Bizkit; (from the 2000's) Slipknot, Linking Park.
