He received his in political science and economics at University of Manitoba then went on to complete a master’s degree in economic development from the London School of Economics.
Business background
After graduating he started looking for work in Alberta and in the same week he was offered two jobs. One was with the Government of Canada, as an economist, and the other was as the program coordinator of the Alberta Native Friendship Centres Association. He chose the road less traveled and in his role went to the 20 Friendship Centres across Alberta, from High Level to Pincher Creek.
Along the way, he developed a knack for working people through the difficult situations their Centres were facing. Sometimes it was financial, sometimes it was a governance issue; there was always a great deal of uncertainty. Centres faced with these challenges started handing management responsibilities to him and he became the executive director of Centres in Rocky Mountain House, Red Deer, Calgary and Fort McMurray. Here he discovered firsthand how to make difficult decisions, to deal with dissenters and eventually bring them on board.
Erick went on to do a work term in South Africa at a social housing association, assisting in the development of the organization’s business plan, working with tenants on community building initiatives and helping to establish a tenant advisory board. He returned from South Africa and joined the City of Edmonton as a Strategic Planner. Currently, he work as Edmonton’s senior economist where he studies the local economy, and help form policy.
Community Involvement
When Erick returned from South Africa he began to look for opportunities to use what he knew and what he had learned. He joined the board of Change for Children, was elected treasurer, and the following year became president. That year, the organization exceeded 1 million dollars in revenue for the first time.
