Era 1 (Kim Petras)

"Era 1" is a term often used to describe a slew of singles released by German singer-songwriter Kim Petras throughout 2017 and early-2019. Originally believed to be a part of her debut studio album, the tracks have not been included in one formal body of work, with no plans being announced to do so.
Petras formally announced the end of "Era 1" on February 6, 2019.
Background
In August of 2017, Petras released her debut single, "I Don't Want It At All", the first song from the collection. The track was released independently and was a moderate commercial successful, going viral on Spotify. Following this, Petras released a slew of singles including "Hills", "Slow It Down", and "Hillside Boys" before striking further solo success with "Heart To Break" (2018), which would become her second entry on a Billboard chart. Petras then embarked on Troye Sivan's Bloom Tour as a supporting act and released a novelty EP for Halloween titled Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1, all while continuing to release singles throughout the end of 2018 in to early-2019. The later releases included more collaborations than previously, with Petras releasing tracks with Cheat Codes, SOPHIE, Baby E., and Lil Aaron.
Critical reception
Following the conclusion of Era 1, Billboard released an article recounting the best of Petras' 11 "standalone singles" and arranged a Critic's Picks list. Amanda Lee of Digital Digest stated "Since August 2017’s viral hit single “I Don’t Want it At All,” German pop princess Kim Petras has been serving us hit digital singles since her debut. Now, she’s concluding the era with three new songs. Each artwork single features a different neon color of Petras’s signature avatar, and she’s now completed the rainbow." Lucas Villa of axs dubbed Era 1 as a "rainbow-colored singles collection" and praised singles "1,2,3 dayz up" as a club-banger and "Homework" for "includ some puppy love lyrics contrasted with 'counting stacks'". In their article about Era 1, DirectLyrics states that this collection is most likely Petras' take on releasing an album, but in an original, unconventional way. Hip Hop Magz was positive in their review of the collection and said "Petras has established herself as one of the thrilling new faces in pop music," and dubbed the series as an example of "pop perfection".
