Emily Windsnap and the Castle in the Mist

Emily Windsnap and the Castle in the Mist is a 2007 children's book written by the New York Times bestselling author Liz Kessler.
Continuing after "Emily Windsnap and the Monster From the Deep", Emily discovers a pretty ring that was moved from the Kraken's lair after he was set free. Emily puts it on but cannot take it off. To her horror she learns that it was given to King Neptune by the only human he ever loved. He had discarded it when she broke his heart and vanished. Neptune is enraged when he discovers the ring and decrees that humans and merpeople can never be together again. He curses Emily into leaving her semi-mer state, and becomes something that is neither entirely human nor completely mermaid. Neptune also announces that in three days that she will be forced to live either as a human forever with her mother or as mermaid with her father, never to transform again. Emily is sent to the Castle in the Mist, the place rumored to hold the secret to break the curse and discovered what really happened to Neptune's lover. Along the way, she meets a boy named Aaron, who is similarly cursed as her and they both try to help each other. Will Emily and Aaron be able to break the curse?
