Elysian Shadows is an upcoming commercially developed independent game developed by GyroVorbis; the creative talent behind the YouTube web series Adventures in Game Development and the first game published by WaterMelon for Sega Dreamcast. Elysian Shadows has been marketed as a Next Gen 2D RPG as it fuses aspects of 16-bit era console RPGs with modern advanced rendering techniques, dynamic 2D and 3D perspectives, positional and dynamic audio, rigid body physics, and particle simulators. Elysian Shadows is the first RPG developed for the system in over a decade, In addition to Dreamcast the game has been announced for Android, iOS, OS X, Ouya, Linux and Microsoft Windows. The game is scheduled for crowd funding via Kickstarter in August. Gameplay The goal of Elysian Shadows has been to re-invent the 16-bit RPG by fusing traditional elements of the 2D genre with modern advanced rendering techniques, dynamic 2D and 3D perspectives, positional and dynamic audio, rigid body physics, and particle simulators. The gift of magic is bestowed upon loyal followers of The Creator, while the nonreligious sects of society are forced to rely upon technological advances in their daily lives. Upon uncovering a mysterious artifact deep within one of the ancient ruins scattered throughout the land, Julien and friends find themselves thrust into the middle of this mounting conflict, and they must now solve the mystery of the ancient civilizations to prevent the destruction of their own. Development Since October 2007, the development of Elysian Shadows has been chronicled in the YouTube web series Adventures in Game Development. The early years of development were spent on designing original technology and tools that the game required, the technology was simultaneously developed for OS X and Windows. The technology was later ported to a host of devices including Android and Linux which enabled the developers to design the game without worrying about porting. In May, 2014, it was announced that WaterMelon developer of Pier Solar offered a publishing deal to GyroVorbis for the Sega Dreamcast platform. In June, Girgis tendered his resignation at Adtran where he was a software engineer to work as a full time game developer. On June 19th, Girgis and Tyler Rogers were invited to give a presentation at their alumni university; University of Alabama in Huntsville.
