Edward Bomber

Edward Paul (Eddy) Bomber was born on November 12, 1959 to parents Francis and Marian Bomber in Virginia. He was their 5th child and 3rd son. The family moved to Portland Oregon when he was 3, and that is where he grew up. He gained notoriety in High School when he became one of the three Cross-Country running stars of Central Catholic High School. From his Sophomore through Senior year, Central never lost a dual cross-country meet. Due to the way cross country is scored, if one team takes the first three places, they will win the meet. Central had 3 of the top 4 runners in the league, so there was only one contested meet (and their deep team was able to win the meet). For the regional and State meets, Central had a respectable showing, winning the region, and taking second in state all three years (1976-1978). In the latter part of this period, Eddy ran his first marathon, and this became his focus. In addition to running, Eddy was also a scholar, and won a partial scholarship to Notre Dame as a Freshman. He ran Cross Country and Track for them, but preferred the Pacific Northwest, and finished his college career at Oregon State University, where he graduated with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. During this time, he continued to compete in 2 or 3 marathons a year. In 1985 (?), he was debating between running the Portland Marathon or the Seattle Marathon. He decided to participate in the former. As the first Oregon Resident to finish (11th overall), he won entrance fees & accommodation to the latter, so he participated in both.
While his primary focus was running, he would also participate in other activities like biking. He assisted his younger brother (Stephen) in completing the STP (the largest organized Double Century bike ride in the US) and several MS-150 rides (major fund-raiser for the Oregon MS Society). After developing an interest in cycling, he started exploring triathlons. In this vein, he founded NWMultisports, a bricks-&-mortar store in Corvallis, as well as online at http://northwestmulti.com/. The store had just started prior to the accident, but has continued as a source for equipment for all three elements of a triathelon competition.
He knew he had the stamina and speed for the land events, and sought to improve his time in swimming. However, it was the land portion (specifically biking) that proved fatal. On October ?? 2008, Eddy was involved in an accident with a log truck during what he would consider a "warm-up ride" and died of his injuries. He is survived by his wife, and four children (age 4-15), and by his siblings (Robert Bomber, Ann Lewis, Catherine Simpson, Andrew Bomber, Stephen Bomber, and Dorothy Schaffer).
