Duy Long Nguyen

Duy Long Nguyen, known professionally as Longy Nguyen ( born October 17 1964) is a Vietnamese-born Australian Sports Injury Therapist. He is most known for his work with The Matrix film trilogy directed by starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving. He has also worked with the British Olympic track and field team coached by Linford Christie including Darren Campbell, Katherine Merry at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and the Athens 2004 Olympics. In 2004, Longy wrote his biography The Dragon's Journey published by Harper Collins.
Early Life
In 1969, Longy joined army scouts under the guidance of his mentors at the Corps II headquarters and the US army in Pleiku where his father Hien Nguyen was Inspector General along with his US army superiors General Ngo Dzu and John Paul Vann. At 10 years old Longy became a 1st degree Taekwondo Black Belt under General Choi Hong Hi and Nam Tae Hi head of the ARVN Taekwondo foundation. Soon after, 'at age 14, he had taken command of his own black-market gang'. During the fall of Saigon in 1975, Longy’s father had refused to evacuate, and was sent to a communist hard labour prison camp ( re-education camp ). 'Longy and his siblings, after 14 unsuccessful attempts, fled the country in an old river boat, surviving an attack by Thai Pirates'. During their exile, they were rescued by a Japanese oil tanker. In Japan, Longy resumed his martial arts training and in 1981 after one year in Japan Longy and his family left to settle in Sydney, Australia. In 1998, he began working for Australian businessman Frank Lowy to which 'employed Longy for about a decade as a bodyguard and therapist'.
Career
Rugby League (1996-98)
As a trainer and injury therapist, Longy joined the Manly Sea Eagles in 1996 under coach Bob Fulton for three seasons ( 1996-98 ). He was also involved with the Rugby League Test team in 1997 and 1998 as well as the Queensland State of Origin team during ( 1996 - 1997 ) under coach Paul Vautin and captain Adrian Lam, 'treating Lam for severe shoulder injuries since the representative season'
Boxing (1996-2003)
Longy worked with middleweight boxers Troy Waters from 1995 - 97 and Shannon Taylor 1997 - 2001 as an injury therapist and trainer. 'Longy has also been the corner-man for Anthony Mundine and Danny Green' as well as Johnny Lewis and Garry StClair.
The Matrix (1999-2003)
After Keanu Reeves sustained a neck injury there was a halt in the production of the Matrix. Following a neck treatment from Longy, Reeves was able to continue training in martial arts and perform various stunt scenes. During this time, Longy also worked with co-stars, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss. Additionally, 'Longy also developed a strong rapport' with Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski.
British Olympic Track and Field (2000, 2004)
Longy worked with the British track and field team during the Sydney 2000 Olympics and 2004 Athens Olympic games coached by Linford Christie. He also treated 'Darren Campbell in the warm up area at the Sydney Olympic games' as well as English Sprinter Katherine Merry.
Australian Horse Racing (1996-2016)
Longy Nguyen helped deliver two time Melbourne Cup winner, Jimmy Cassidy’s winning form in his comeback year 1996 until his retirement in 2016. During this time, Longy tended to 'Cassidy's chronic back and shoulder problems' including 'stretching the muscles and joints'
Work and Technique
As a Sports Injury Therapist, Longy applies both Eastern and Western clinical treatments on his patients. In combining these, he treats musculoskeletal injuries. Longy has been a member of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society( ATMS ) since 1995.
Book
The Dragon’s Journey is a memoir about Nguyen’s Life co-written by James Knight, published in 2004 by Harper Collins, forwarded by Rupert Murdoch and Frank Lowy to whom 'jointly wrote the forward to his life story'. The book follows Longy’s life from childhood amidst the Vietnam War until 2004, during his career in Australia.
