Duane Storey (born April 7, 1977 in Chilliwack, British Columbia) is Vancouver-based blogger, web developer and concert photographer. He is the co-founder of BraveNewCode, a Canadian-based web development company. He has contributed to several popular open-source WordPress plugins including the Crossroads Flickr Plugin, the WPtouch iPhone theme, and is currently developing the first inter-user chat module for BuddyPress. He often writes about technology on his personal website, and has been quoted in various Vancouver newspapers.
Photography
Duane's photography first gained attention in the winter of 2006 when he started creating high dynamic range photographs of Vancouver. Since that time, his photographs have been published on NASA's website, in Air Transat's in-flight magazine, Martina Franko's website, and also by several Canadian concert promoters. He has photographed many musicians and actors including Michael Buble, Blue Rodeo, Leslie Feist, Russell Peters, Colin James, Matthew Good, Sarah McLachlan, Jessie Farrell and the Trailer Park Boys.
Duane also acts as a freelance photojournalist, and recently attended the 2008 Canadian Juno Awards in Calgary, AB, as a member of the press. He has also been invited to speak at several photography conferences about his high dynamic range photographs.
Research
Duane graduated from the University of British Columbia with a master's degree in Electrical and Computer engineering. He has published research in the areas of ensemble weather modeling and high definition video scalability schemes. He also has a patent pending in the field of voice over IP.
Conferences
Duane is an active member of the Vancouver web community, and has helped to organize several conferences -- he was a co-organizer of BarCamp Vancouver 2008 and was the prime organizer for the first international WordPress conference on Whistler Mountain in January of 2009
Charity
Duane writes often about his concerns regarding homelessness in Vancouver. In 2008, he teamed up with Rebecca Bollwitt and Canadian musician Matthew Good to help raise nearly $10,000 for the Union Gospel Mission charity during a 24-hour blogging event called "Blogathon".
Injury
On November 4th, 2006, Duane was assaulted by four unknown individuals while walking home from a friend's wedding. He ended up in the hospital with five facial fractures, and lacerations to both his scalp and his face. He has undergone two rounds of reconstructive surgery since then in an effort to rebuild the orbital floor of his left eye.
