DriveImage XML

DriveImage XML is a commercial program which is free for home users and used for imaging and backing up partitions and logical drives.

Product features
* Backup logical drives and partitions to image files
* Browse image files
* View and extract files from images
* Restore images to the same or a different drive
* Copy directly from drive to drive
* Schedule automatic backups with Task Scheduler

How it works
Images are created using Microsoft's Volume Shadow Services (VSS), allowing for "hot images" to be taken of the drive. This means that a drive can be imaged even if it is currently in use. Images are then stored in XML files, also allowing them to be processed with 3rd party tools.

System requirements
DriveImage XML runs under Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista only. The drive must be formatted with FAT 12, 16, 32 or NTFS.

Known Problems
When imaging a boot/system partition which is encrypted with PGP Desktop's Whole Disk Encryption (all known versions, the latest being 9.8), DriveImage XML will give the error "A device attached to the system is not functioning". TrueCrypt version 5.0 and later's System Encryption feature does not cause problems with DriveImage XML's backup.

When using DriveImage XML on a system running Windows Vista, the user must disable UAC (User Account Control) before imaging the system. UAC is a security feature of Windows Vista, and disabling it is not usually recommended.
