Dr. Gary Richter is a veterinary acupuncturist and veterinary chiropractor. He is the co-owner of Montclair Veterinary Hospital and of Holistic Veterinary Care along with his wife Lee Richter; both these hospitals are situated in Oakland, California. He is also the medical director of both these hospitals He is on the Board of Directors for the Alameda County Veterinary Medical Association and is currently serving as its president. He is known for winning the title of America's Favorite Veterinarian. Education Dr. Gary Richter is a graduate of the University of Florida with a Bachelors of Science, a Masters of Science in Veterinary Medical Science and a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. While in college, he worked at an animal practice, volunteered for a wildlife rehabilitation center, and worked at the College of Veterinary Medicine as an assistant at the Rural Animal Medicine Service where he participated in the medical care of food animals. After graduating, Dr. Richter moved to San Francisco in 1998. Professional Life Dr. Richter began his career as full-time emergency medicine clinician in Berkeley at a Pet Emergency Treatment Service and as a general practitioner at Berkeley Dog & Cat Hospital. Dr. Richter has been the owner and medical director of Montclair Veterinary Hospital since 2002 and Holistic Veterinary Care since 2009. He is also the California Veterinary Medical Association’s Alameda county representative regarding animal disaster planning. In 2007 and 2008, Dr. Richter and his Montclair Veterinary Hospital team received awards from the community, including Best Veterinarian in the East Bay from Oakland Magazine, East Bay Express and KRON 4 TV. Dr. Richter and his two hospitals have been the recipients of over twenty local and national awards including “Best Veterinary Hospital”, “Best Veterinarian”, “Best Canine Therapy Facility” and “Best Alternative Medicine Provider”. Montclair Veterinary Hospital and its associated non-profit, The Pet and Wildlife Fund, was named a “Pillar” of Oakland for years of community service helping pets and wildlife in need. PetPlan also named Dr. Richter as one of the top ten veterinarians in the United States for 2011 and Montclair Veterinary Hospital as one of the top ten veterinary hospitals in 2013. He is also the author of the book "Nutrition for Dogs & Cats: The Foundation of a Long and Happy ". America's Favorite Veterinarian Controversy The controversy started when the contestants of the contest were asked to declaw cats. Dr. Richter was the only vet in the top 20 who refused to make an appointment to declaw a cat while everyone else in the contest declawed cats. Due to this a radical group on the internet started promoting Dr.Richter and bad mouthing the other nominees for their horrific practice of declawing. Since then many of the contestants have changed their policies and refuse to declaw. In the last phase of the contest, he was winning by a large amount but because of the issue the contest was ended early and all the finalists were given the title.
