Dr. Frank P. Savoy Jr

Early life
Frank P. Savoy Jr. was the son of Frank Savoy Sr. and Edna Robin Savoy; born on June 29, 1924 in Mamou,Louisiana. Savoy was the second of 3 children - Joycelyn S. Prescott, Gregory M. Savoy,and himself. After graduating from Mamou High School, Savoynk left Mamou for Louisiana State University where he studied medicine and majored in mechanical engineering. After completing his medical schooling he returned to Mamou in 1950 with his wife, Bobby Savoy and soon opened the hospital that is now known as Savoy Medical Center.
Savoy Memorial Hospital
Savoy Hospital was opened on December 28, 1950 by Frank Savoy Sr. and Jr. 3 years later, a new wing was opened called "Chapel Hall". Soon after this, more beds were brought to the hospital and the dining area and kitchen size were doubled. After Frank Savoy Sr. died 1960, Savoy Jr. was left in charge of all business and major patient related care at Savoy Hospital. He increased the hospital size, with second addition in 1964, and the "East Wing" in 1968. In 1975, a two story building was added and the ownership of the hospital was transferred to the Town of Mamou.
Savoy Medical Center
The Savoy Medical Center was added to the hospital in Fall 1984; this was a multi-million dollar 3 story expansion that included a new lab complete with CT Scan,a pharmacy, and a new Emergency Dept. With these new improvements, Savoy turned the Chapel Hall and East Wing into a nursing home for the elderly of Mamou. Dr. Savoy later added the Savoy Cancer Center, a high tech facility that aimed to help local cancer patients.
Retirement and Death
Savoy filed for bankruptcy in 2005 and moved to Eunice, Louisiana. Due to health complications, he lived the rest of his life in and out of nursing homes and hospitals until his death on August 27, 2010 at the American Legion Hospital of Crowley, Louisiana.
Other facts
Besides being a physician and a surgeon, Savoy was a veteran of WWII,an active civic leader, and a deep sea fisherman. In 1984, Savoy was credited with the construction of Savoy Heights which is a federal apartment building for the elderly. Savoy also holds fishing records,one of which being the Pampano African catch that weighed in at around 27 pounds, the second largest catch at the time.
In December 2000, Savoy was featured on the cover of a National Medicine Magazine called "Health Matters". The issue was dedicated to discussing the history of the hospital and the legacy of Frank Savoy Sr. In a 2013 book written by T.C Elliot,Elliot implies that in the 1960s, Frank Savoy Jr. was a physician to Carlos Marcello and that he was involved in a conspiracy to kill President Kennedy. In a 2014 book,Images of America : Evangeline Parish, Frank Savoy's accomplishments are featured on page 96. The 1973 edition of "State of Louisiana Roster of Officials" lists Dr.Frank P. Savoy Jr. as coroner for Mamou,Louisiana.
