Brooks played high school football at Highland Springs High School in his hometown of Richmond, where he earned academic all-district honors and was named the team's offensive player of the year as a junior.
College career
After redshirting at James Madison in 2006, Brooks started all 12 games at guard for the Dukes as a redshirt freshman in 2007. Professional career
Pre-draft
Prior to the 2010 NFL Draft, Brooks was ranked by CBS Sports as the No. 12 offensive guard in his draft class.
Pittsburgh Steelers
After going unselected in the draft, Brooks was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent. He appeared in three preseason games as a rookie but was waived during final cuts and re-signed to the team's practice squad, where he remained until the week leading up to Super Bowl XLV, when he was promoted to the active roster after starting center Maurkice Pouncey was placed on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain.
On August 3, 2011, Brooks decided to leave the Steelers during training camp and was placed on the Exempt/Left Squad list.
