Donald H. Horner III

Donald H. Horner, III is a Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy assigned to the USS Bonhomme Richard in San Diego, California. He is a 2008 graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Ice hockey career
Horner gained notoriety as a Navy ice hockey player, and was named to the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division-I all-star team as a defenseman during his senior (2007-2008) season. Horner was also recognized by the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League, earning both its Sportsmanship Award and an all-league selection as a defenseman. The Naval Academy Athletic Association named Horner the most outstanding male club sport athlete for the 2007-2008 academic year.
Academic life
Horner was regularly named to one or more academic honor roles. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science, and was the recipient of the Dr. Charles H. Coates Award, which recognizes excellence in the study of military sociology. In addition to his regular summer training stints with the Navy, he also completed two high profile summer internships. The first was at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., under the tutelage of Dr. John J. Hamre and Ms. Linda S. Jamison. Horner's second internship was at West Point's Center for Enhanced Peformance. While there, Donnie worked under the guidance of the Center Director, Colonel James A. Knowlton.
Personal life
An "Army brat," Donald was born at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia on December 8th, 1983. He moved multiple times with his family while his father was on active duty. Donald lived in Virginia (Virginia Beach, Newport News, Hampton, and Yorktown), Massachusetts (Waltham), California (Mountain View), New York (West Point), Kansas (Fort Leavenworth), Germany (Mannheim), Pennsylvania (State College), and Maryland (Centreville). He and his younger sister, Ashley Horner Jarl, attended Grafton High School in Yorktown, Virginia, and State College Area High School in State College, Pennsylvania.
His father, Donald H. Horner, Jr. was an Army football quarterback at West Point. His sister, Ashley Horner Jarl, played Division-I softball at The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. As a high school athlete, Donald earned 9 varsity letters in 5 different sports. He was a 4-year letterwinner in ice hockey at Navy, and was a pitcher on the varsity baseball team during his plebe (freshman) year.
Horner spent a post-graduate year at the Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut. He graduated from Canterbury in 2003. He also spent a year at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, Rhode Island prior to earning his appointment to the Naval Academy.
Donald Horner's family includes parents Donald H. Horner, Jr. and Donell Iva Fryer Horner, and sister Ashley Horner Jarl.
