Djurumani

Carlos Germano, better known as Djurumani, is a Cape Verdean musician. His name derives from the pronunciation of his surname in Guinea, where he has family ties. Djurumani was born in São Nicolau but has lived for over twenty years in Portugal. In common with many Cape Verdean artists, his musical output has been influenced by the experience of exile that many of his countrymen endure as a result of economic necessity. Due to the strength of the Cape Verdean community in Portugal, he has retained strong cultural ties to the island. His music is marked by nostalgia and longing for his homeland. His version of Galo Bedjo (Old Rooster), a classic coladeira song by B. Leza has reached a wider audience thanks to its inclusion in a popular compilation of Cape Verdean music by Putumayo Presents.
