Death of Pearl Gupta

Pearl Gupta (born 1989) was crushed under the wheels of a Blueline public transport bus, in front of her college Aditi Mahavidyalaya on November 19, 2007 at 11:50 AM., after eve teasing, Aditi Mahavidyalaya is a constituent college of Delhi University, resulting in public outcry against eve teasing, and the Blueline bus service.
Chronology of the event
According to media reports, on November 19, 2007 at 11:50 AM., two first-year students of BSW (Bachelor of Social Work), had just got off a DTC bus on route no 113. They were barely 20 metres from the college gate, when a scooterist came from the wrong side, passed lewd comment and tried to drive between Pearl and her friend, Parul, who fell on the footpath as a result, while Pearl who fell on the road, and was crushed by an incoming Blueline bus, which was overspeeding .
Impact
Delhi is plagued by unruly Blueline buses, everyday killing a few pedestrians due to unprofessional drivers behind their wheels. The Delhi government is planning to take the buses off. However, Delhi has no proper solution to its public transport as yet, in spite of Delhi Metro. Pearl's death has sparked off a big debate about the safety of girl students in Delhi. As a sociological and gender issue it always has been discussed. But the grisly manner of her death has unified many women's college students in Delhi to seriously figure out their survival in the city.
