Day Above Ground

Day Above Ground is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles. Stylistically, they cite The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Linkin Park and Wu-Tang Clan as inspiration.
Asian Girlz controversy
The band is known for the 2013 song and music video "Asian Girlz" which gained viral levels of attention due to its lyrics about Asian stereotypes and sexual imagery. The song was labeled "the most racist song of all time" by critics. The video features actress Levy Tran, who was strongly criticized for appearing in it. She later apologized, but defended the band against accusations of racism. Critics threatened to hold an organized protest outside the band's next gig; also, a petition began circulating to get the House of Blues to cancel the band's next performance there. Musically, the song heavily utilizes the Oriental Riff. The video contains macrophilic imagery, depicting miniature versions of the band members trapped inside a birdcage, later joining a giant, naked Tran in the bathtub.
The band responded to critics by posting a comment on its YouTube page pointing out that its bassist is Indonesian and that the intent of the song was to satirize the obsession of some white men with Asian women, whom the comment described as "some of the most gorgeous women on the planet".
