Darkmoor

Darkmoor is a fictitious location within the Marvel Comics universe, originally introduced in the first issue of Captain Britain Weekly in October 1976, and thereafter used in many stories featuring Captain Britain and, occasionally, other Marvel UK characters. When first seen, Darkmoor was the location of both the Darkmoor Energy Research Centre (a high-tech, top secret government facility at which University student Brian Braddock is doing work experience) and a stone circle which was a centre of great mystical power, but as the Captain Britain mythos expanded it lso played host to Darkmoor Prison and to the sinister Darkmoor Castle, home of the Black Baron.
Darkmoor appears to be loosely based on both Dartmoor in South Devon and Salisbury Plain, the location of Stonehenge, though Darkmoor's actual location in the comics is unclear. It has been described as being in the North of England (one story places it definitely in Northumberland) but on other occasions it seems to be reachable fairly quickly from London. This may, however, simply be due to inadequate research into Britain's geography by the early Captain Britain writers, most of whom were American.
Darkmoor was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Herb Trimpe.
