The Dark Portal is an artifact in the fictional Warcraft universe. It was constructed by the possessed mage Medivh and the warlocks of the Shadow Council to be used by the Orc race to transport their invading army from their home world of Draenor (later known as Outland) into the World of Azeroth.
After being destroyed by Khadgar, archmage of the Kirin Tor, at the end of the Second War (Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness), the gate was reopened in the expansion Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal. An expedition of alliance forces under Khadgar's leadership travelled through and managed to destroy the Dark Portal from the other side. However, numerous other gates had already been created on Draenor, bringing demonic beings from all over universe to the shattered world. Finally, the Portal to Azeroth was reconstructed and used by the Burning Legion in an attempt to invade the human world once more. Since then, it has functioned as the connection between the playable worlds Azeroth and Outland in World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade.
The Dark Portal on the Outland side is known as the Stair of Destiny (presumably named by the Horde), and serves as the background intro screen for the expansion (much as the Azeroth side served as the backdrop screen of the original World of Warcraft). The Stair of Destiny is much larger and more intricately detailed than the Portal on the other side.
