History
Ramiro Guerra is widely known as the grandfather of modern dance in Cuba. He founded in 1959 the Conjunto Nacional de Danza Moderna (National Modern Dance Group), which was later to be acknowledged as the Danza Contemporanea de Cuba company (Contemporary Dance of Cuba). Ramiro Guerra brought modern dance to Cuba. He is a very renown dance researcher, having published in 1969 Appreciation of Dance, in 1989 The Theatricalization of Folklore and Other Essays and in 1998 Dancing Caliban.
Ramiro Guerra moulded Danza Contemporanea’s repertoire into a Cuban blend of modern American theatre, Afro-Caribbean dance styles and classical European Ballet. Unlike ballet, the Danza Contemporanea modern development was entwined with folklore.
Nous under the direction of Miguel Iglesias, Danza Contemporane de Cuba offers its dancers great opportunities. Miguel Iglesias was born in Havana on May 10th 1948, he started dancing with the company in 1975 before becoming its director.
With more than 70 productions in its active repertoire, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba has toured throughout America, Europe, Asia and Africa.
