Danielle Twilley

Danielle Twilley is a South African plant scientist who researches the use of indigenous plants as a treatment for cancer. She received a 2018 International Rising Talent award from the programme as a PhD student at the University of Pretoria.
Career
Twilley's research indicated that a native South African plant had cytotoxicity toward melanoma cells. Her research is on turning the antiangiogenic agent into gold nanoparticles to better target tumors.<ref name":2" /> The plant she identified serves to increase the SPF of sunscreen due to its high antioxidant content.<ref name":2" /> This is an important discovery because melanoma is one of the most dangerous skin cancers, Twilley says.<ref name":1" /> As of 2018, she had success during the in-vitro phase, and hoped to license the plant to companies who would develop a treatment.<ref name":0" />
