Dakota Sport Retriever

Name of Breed: Dakota Sport Retriever
Country of Origin: United States, a new breed originally bred from the Golden Retriever, American Cocker Spaniel, and English Cocker Spaniel. They are now a multi generation breed, and registered with the CPR. First bred and registered in South Dakota.
Size: A medium sized dog, the Dakota Sport Retriever stands from 14 to 19 inches tall, with 15 to 17 inches being average. Males are typically a bit larger then females. They weigh from 20 to 60 pounds, with 30 to 45 pounds being average.
Coat: They have unique "slipper" feet, with hair between their toes. They have from a straight, smooth coat, to a wavy coat. They are considered a long haired breed, and are medium to lower shedders. The most prominent color is gold, but they come in all colors and patterns. Solid colors, merle, parti colored, roan, and sable.
Charactor: Dakota Sport Retrievers love water, love to fetch, and are very fun dogs outdoors, while being calm indoors. They are very gentle, loving family dogs. They can be trained to hunt upland birds and/or water fowl. They love toys, and often carry toys around. If a toy is not available, they may carry anything that they can find! They love water and are very good swimmers.
Temperament: Dakota Sport Retrievers are soft tempered, being very gentle, loving dogs. They are very people oriented, and friendly with everyone. They are usually quiet, but they may bark when playing and when they hear a strange noise, but are even friendly with strangers. Dakota Sport Retrievers are very good with children and other animals. They form strong bonds with their owners.
Care: The Dakota Sport Retriever should be brushed weekly, and bathed when needed. They do not require trimming, but can get their ears trimmed twice a year to avoid matting. Care should be taken when cleaning their ears to avoid ear infections. Nails may require trimming as needed. Usually a very healthy breed, they have a life span averaging from 14 to 17 years. Litter size may vary, but it most typically from 6 to 8 puppies per litter.
Training: Being highly willing to please, they are very easy to train. They love to follow their owners, which makes leash training easy. They are very motivated by praise, toys, and treats. Being very soft tempered, they cannot tolerate harsh treatment.
Activity: Dakota Sport Retrievers love to play! Playing fetch and taking them swimming are their favorite activities. They also enjoy quiet walks in the park or a quiet area. They do tend to dislike heavy traffic and very busy areas. They may become overweight if overfed and under exercised.
