The first miniature golden retriever was produced by Kathy Burgess in 2003. Burgess had the vision for years of creating a hybrid that looked and acted like a golden retriever but in a smaller, more comfortable size. Burgess bred a new hybrid named the Comfort Retriever® and described them as miniature golden retrievers. The initial hybrid was composed of cocker spaniel and golden retriever. Other breeders also introduced hybrids called Comfort Retriever, however other breeds may have been included. Burgess introduced another hybrid in 2007 that had only poodle and golden retriever in them in order to give the dogs a better look and a more reliable temperament. The poodle made the dogs somewhat hypoallergenic and decreased shedding properties. Burgess has trademarked the name Comfort Retriever® . The Comfort Retriever® was the first miniature golden retriever ever registered and is registered with the DDKC (Designer Dog Kennel Club). They are also registered with the DBR (Designer Breed Registry) as Comfort Retriever® so they can be dual registered. The breeders that were copying her old breeding program then found other registries that would register their cocker spaniel hybrids as miniature/petite/toy golden retrievers. Therefore there are now several registries that register miniature golden retrievers, but the dogs can be composed of poodle, cocker spaniel, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or various other breeds. Since miniature golden retriever is a hybrid, it is not considered to be a pure bred dog.
