Cyrill Stachniss (born 1977 in Göttingen, Germany) is a German roboticist. He is an academic advisor (AkadR) at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg where he works in the laboratory for Autonomous Intelligent Systems. He made significant contributions to problem of the mobile robot exploration, simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) as well as other topics related to mobile robotics. Biography Education Cyrill Stachniss studied physics and computer science at the University of Marburg and received the Vordiplom degree in both disciplines. In 2002, he received the Diploma degree from the University of Freiburg in computer science as well as his Doctorate degree in 2006. His thesis advisor was Wolfram Burgard. Career Cyrill Stachniss is currently an academic advisor (AkadR) at the laboratory for Autonomous Mobile Systems at the University of Freiburg. From November 2006 to September 2007, he was a postdoc in Freiburg. Up to November 2006, he was a senior researcher at ETH Zurich in the Autonomous Systems Lab of Roland Siegwart. Before 2006, he was with the University of Freiburg. Research Cyrill Stachniss developed several probabilistic methods to mobile robot navigation, especially the problem of autonomous mobile robot exploration in which a robot has to learn a model of its environment without human intervention. Together with Giorgio Grisetti and Wolfram Burgard, he made substantial contributions to the simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) problem, which is the problem of estimating a map of the environment and at the same time the position of the robot relative to that map. He and his colleagues published two mapping systems, GMapping a fully functioning solution to the SLAM problems designed for LIDAR sensors produced by SICK AG as well as Toro, a SLAM back-end to compute maximum likelihood maps based on constraints resulting from abstract observations. He is furthermore one of the developers of the Carnegie Mellon Robot Navigation Toolkit (CARMEN) and the founder of the OpenSLAM software repository. Cyrill Stachniss is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Robotics. Cyrill Stachniss received the 7th EURON Georges Giralt Award for the best European PhD thesis in robotics, the Wolfgang-Gentner PhD Award, as well as an Award of the German Engineering Society (VDI).
