Crime in Buenos Aires Argentina
|
Crime in Buenos Aires Argentina In the past few years, crime has been escalating to levels not previously seen in Buenos Aires. There are more and more violent crimes each day, and, thefts of property both with and without the owner present are becoming a daily occurence. One of the most common types of robberies are called "salidera bancaria" which means "on the way out of the bank". This type of robbery works as follows - an "entregador" which means "lookout" which may be a bank employee or a person waiting in the bank posing as a customer, will signal a person outside of the bank branch when they see you leave the bank, knowing you have made a withdrawal of cash. Once you leave the bank branch with the cash, another criminal with either follow you, grab the cash from you at gunpoint, or will wait for you at your destination and hold you up and threaten your life for the cash. One very high profile case happened last year to a young pregnant woman named Carolina Piparo in the city of La Plata which is the government seat of the Buenos Aires province. She left a bank branch of Santander Rio bank with cash that was withdrawn for the downpayment of a home. A criminal on a motorcycle followed her, beat her, shot her in the face and took her money. Unfortunately her child, a baby boy named Isidro, had to be delivered by emergency and lived for a short time after and subsequently died as a result of this incident. Another robbery recently took place at Banco Provincia in the Belgrano neighborhood. A group of criminals rented a store next to the bank branch and dug a tunnel underneath the bank branch from next door into the bank´s vault and removed the contents of 130 safe deposit boxes. There is also a high incidence of robberies to small businesses both during daylight and evening hours. One robbery of note happened in a shop in the Villa Urquiza neighborhood to a candy shop called CANDYLAND. Two well dressed criminals entered the store and robbed the cash register of the daily till, and stole merchandise as well. Here is a link to footage of the robbery: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ypn-gjCETr4 The government of the city of Buenos Aires (Mauricio Macri, mayor) claims they are taking measures to lessen the crime that is getting worse by the day, however so far there have been little or no results. There is a new police force in place in the city of Buenos Aires called "Policia Metropolitana" (Metropolitan Police) http://www.metropolitana.gob.ar/ which is a new police force that is assigned only to the capital city of Buenos Aires. Formerly, "La Policia Federal" (Federal Police) http://www.policiafederal.gov.ar/ were assigned to all provinces, the province of Buenos Aires as well as the capital city. :
