Coprocessor tuning

Coprocessor tuning refers to the process of tuning or calibrating a math coprocessor.

RS/6000

Early RS/6000 systems included a knob to tune a computer's math coprocessor. Although the RS/6000 features automatic tuning, due to the RS/6000's use in scientific computing, users may wish to tune their math coprocessor for greater precision. AIX includes an application, cotune, that computes pi using the coprocessor, and then subtracts the result from a fixed, known-correct value of pi. Users then adjust the tuning knob until the difference computed is zero.

There is a patch that allows manual tuning in the Linux kernel, slated to be released in Linux 2.6.27.
