Conversational Photography

Conversational Photography is a new way of communication with pictures. It is a 2.0 narrative that has arisen along with mobile devices and social media. In short, Conversational Photography is a new use of photography in which pictures, screenshots, selfies, illustrations…. (all kinds of graphic material) are send through social media aiming to represent a concept or to send a message but putting aside the written word.
Context
As a result of the advances in the technology of digital manipulation, traditional photography has undergone a major transformation, insofar that today this activity is perceived in a very different way: the photographic act has evolved into a more immediate and omnipresent communication strategy, represented in the use of PDAs and cell phones, webcams and satellites.
With the advent and evolution of the mobile phone, today we find ourselves at a point where technological convergence is such that it is possible to make a call, document the day by day or even transmit a live concert only by using the built-in camera on the phone.
As a result, it not only began to emerge new apps, but also new narratives, such as Conversational Photography, allowing us to further improve the level of expression that can be achieved with this device.
The world and the way we interact are changing, and recent photographic technology is giving way to new modes of expression based on the conversations present in social media, and that's exactly what we call Conversational Photography.
Definition
Conversational Photography allows to send, receive, comment, rate, re-signify and, essentially, to share images with emotional content through social networks. Following the maxim "a picture is worth a thousand words", Conversational Photography is a new narrative associated with the use of social networks in mobile devices, which has arisen from the need to economize to the most the number of characters used.
Mobile Communication is characterized by its ability to socialize and its ubiquity but, above all, by the immediacy of speech. And in this vein, Conversational Photography has emerged as the paradigm of social communication in mobile devices. It is a whole new field of study that has emerged in the recent years.
History - Social Media
Experts are not sure of when we can talk of the beginnings of Conversational Photography, but if it is due to choose a moment, it would be around 2009. During this year two important facts converged: first, the appearance of Whatsapp and, second, the popularization and improvement of the cameras on cellphones.
Obviously its use evolved through the years as it grown more and more popular. In 2010 Instagram was launched, and it changed the way people uses the camera on their phones. Since then, cellphones are no longer a device for calling, receiving text messages, listening to music or browsing the Internet; they became more like an extension of the person, a device with which we can be communicated at every moment and share all their thoughts, impressions and experiences live, at the very moment. So we started to look at our cellphones as a device to express ourselves through images. And it was transfer to other apps such as Whatsapp itself, Telegram or Whatsapp Messenger.
But the big turning point, the app that took Conversational Photography to the point it is nowadays was Snapchat, which appeared also in 2010 but it wasn’t so popular until 2013. Snapchat allows its users to take photographs, record videos and send them to a limited contact list. Practically, there is no text and the message is understood only with the image.
