The term is often used in conjunction with the term hybrid networks.
Content convergence has increasingly been a challenge for Pay-TV operators as consumers have demanded increasing volumes of video content from a variety of sources for viewing on their large flat screen television sets. In recent years, the development of hybrid set-top box es that can be connected to both traditional broadcast and broadband internet networks, has helped to turn content convergence from a concept in to reality.
A rapid change in consumers’ appetites for viewing content, including video and images, hosted in different locations via multiple networks on their large flat screen television sets, has also driven the growth of content convergence. Hybrid set-top box es enable consumers to bring together linear content television channels, video on-demand, user-generated content and so-called over-the-top content from video aggregation sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, Boxee and Hulu on a single piece of consumer premise equipment . Increasingly these devices enable consumers to distribute content to multiple networked devices around their homes.
An increasing number of operators are adopting hybrid set-top box es in order to deliver the converged multimedia experience that their subscribers are demanding.
