Comfortability

Comfortability:

"Comfortability" is a new psychological term created by Dr. Jack Grenan, a practicing hypnotherapist and psychologist. The definition of "comfortability" is a human being's innate need to adjust their physical and mental condition when their current staus becomes discomforting to the point of needing to be changed to produce a more tolerant or ccomfortable feeling.This results in less tension and more " comfortability' for the individual. At the treshold point of,"needing to be changed", an individual will physically or mentally change their current situation to alleviate the discomfort.This " change" could be in the form of mental and/or physical changes or both. It is important to note that the changes caused by the need " To be more comfortable " can be positive or negative. An example of a positive behavior to improve an individuals comfortability would be if a person chose to return to school to eliminate or reduce their dissatisfaction with their feelings of low self esteem due to feeling inadequate intellectually when compared to others. A negative behavior resulting from the same feelings of low self esteem due to perceived feelings of intellectual inadequacy would be to take drugs or drink alcohol to mask the discomfort.

The applicability of the term " Comfortability" in treatment.

The term comfortability threshold explains all changes in human behavior.Examples of these human behaviors range from the simplest and unharmful, such as tapping a pencil to combat the boredom of a meeting, to the acting out of murder to satisfy the mental discomfort of painful memories of childhood sexual abuse that results in a psychopathical individual to commit murder. The significance of this term relative to treatment is the importance of assisting a patient to recognize when he/she reaches their comfortability threshold and have the need to alter their current situation. It is essential for a therapist to help the patient learn to recognize when they reach their threshold and use positive behavior when seeking to change the individuals current thoughts or physical situation that are creating discomfort. This concept would be crucial to successfully treat drug addiction among other mental conditions.
