Comanche Stallion is a 2005 western fantasy film that John Ford had wanted to make, and is based on the 1958 book written by Tom Millstead. As both producer and screenwriter, octogenarian Harry Carey Jr. announced that it would be the "final film" of his career. Background The main cast consists of multiple-award-winning icons of the Western film genre: James Arness, best known for his 20 years as Marshal Matt Dillon in the television series Gunsmoke, had worked with Ford on Wagon Master (1950), Hondo (1953), and the 1955 television series Wide Wide World; Harry Carey Jr. had worked on more than a dozen Ford westerns, as well as with Arness on Gunsmoke and Wagon Master; Rance Howard had worked on a number of westerns, as well as with Arness on Gunsmoke; Robert Carradine is also a veteran of the genre, having started with Bonanza in 1971 and with John Wayne in The Cowboys in 1972. John Ford had wanted to make this film but other commitments and failing health prevented it. Wishing to honor Ford, author Tom Millstead contacted Clyde Lucas and Harry Carey Jr., who became producers.
