Clyde Lucas

Clyde Lucas (born September 10, 1951 in St. Louis, Missouri) is an American director, composer and producer.

History
Lucas started his musical career at the age of 14, playing drums and touring with the Jimmy Strickland Band. Strickland hosted his own country western TV series. He made his first TV appearance in 1966 on the "St. Louis Hop" dance show.

In 1969, Lucas formed his own rock group; from 1969 to 1970 he played all the major rock clubs in St. Louis, and opened for The Flock and the Lemon Pipers

He moved to California in 1971, where he met and played drums for JJ Mack and opened for The Chambers Brothers. Lucas was a drummer for Charley D & Milo at Epic Records, followed by drums with Bruce & Dixie Innes of the Original Caste who had the Million Seller record "One Tin Soldier." Performed with John Hartford (gentle on my mind) and for John Denver in Spokane, Washington.

Lucas also appeared and played lead guitar in the Alison Troy Band, fronted by Paul Williams, for the 1977 two-part series on ABC, Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew meet Dracula.

Later Lucas met his singing partner, Bobbi McGavran, with whom he has performed for 30 years. They recorded with Haji Sound Recording of Los Angeles who recorded "Loggins & Messina." The two opened the Crazy Horse Saloon, performed at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas, and were the house band at Knotts Berry Farm's "Barn Dance." They also performed and acted in Knotts Berry Farm national TV commercials. They were featured in the Knotts Berry Farm parade with Roy Rogers & Dale Evans. Were the opening act for Roy Rogers and Dale Evans in Phoenix, Arizona and performed at "Rawhide" Amusement Park, Arizona.

Bobbi and Clyde have provided the award music for the "Golden Boot Awards," benefiting the Motion Picture & Television Fund. Some artist they have backed at the Boot: Dusty Rogers, Glen Campbell and Randy Travis.

Bobbi & Clyde with Scott Hendrickson formed the Seaweed Cowboys in the 1970s. 1975 they guest starred and performed on KOCE's "Starboard" on PBS. 1976 Bobbi & Clyde appeared on ABC "Good Morning San Diego." Their musicians included: Ed Black (Linda Ronstadt), James Burton (Elvis, Rick Nelson), Tommy Morgan, harmonica (Dances With Wolves, Rockford Files), Bill Cunningham (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Hoyt Axton) and Duncan Cameron (Amazing Rhythm Aces & Sawyer Brown). Bobbi & Clyde and the Seaweed Cowboys album has become a collectors item.

Bobbi & Clyde performed with Doodles Weaver (Spike Jones). The performance was a high honor for them. Mr. Weaver was a great actor/comedian and the uncle of Sigourney Weaver (Alien)

In 1980, Lucas, as a cowboy, acted with Jack Palance and Stephanie Zimbalist in NBC Movie "A Golden Moment."

1981, Bobbi and Clyde performed for Hal Needham and Dani Janssen's wedding on the backlot of Universal Studio. They were featured in People Magazine.

In 1982, Lucas composed music for the Orange County School District and wrote the music for radio commercials for the Costa Mesa/Newport Beach newspaper, the Daily Pilot.

Lucas moved to Burbank, California in 1983, where he met stuntman Yakima Canutt. Lucas and John Crawford wrote a song about Canutt called "Yak's Last Ride." Crawford directed and Lucas and Canutt acted in a bio/music video of the song, which aired on Showtime/Movie Channel for 3 years, before and after every Western film shown. Lucas, Crawford and Frank Pollack were successful in having Canutt receive his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1985, shortly before Canutt's death. It was presented to Canutt by Charlton Heston, whom he had action directed in Ben Hur. To date, Canutt is the only stuntman to receive an Oscar and have a star on the Walk of Fame. Funds were raised by a "Hoedown for Yakima" at the Burbank Elks lodge. The audience included Linda Evans, Harry Carey Jr., Pat Buttram, Lash La Rue, Hank Worden, Bruce Boxleitner.

Lucas attended with Linda Evans the AFI Salute to Barbara Stanwyck, sitting with Billy Wilder. Mr. Lucas with Bunky Young traveled to Spain with Linda Evans and attended the tv specials of George Burns and Bob Hope.

In 1985, Lucas wrote a children's song called the "Land of Blue Bears." He formed an animation company, Land of Blue Bears, Inc. with Birgitta Johansson. Together they created a children's special entitled "Who Saves The Village?" directed by Fred Crippen (creator of Roger Ramjet) winning a Telly Award. Currently, they are in post production on a new series "It's Fun To Learn With Ol' Blue" featuring the character "Ol' Blue" from the "Land of Blue Bears."

2007 together, Lucas and Johansson created "Drake Diamond" that is in now production.

Directing

1985: UCLA Film School: Pre/Production/Post

In 1985, Lucas met partners Hank Worden and Harry Carey Jr. Lucas directed Thank Ya, Thank Ya Kindly, a film on the life of Hank Worden, with guests Clint Eastwood, Paul Hogan, Harry Carey Jr., Ben Johnson, Frankie Avalon, stuntman Dean Smith and director Burt Kennedy. It aired on PBS stations and the Nostalgia Channel.

In 1986, Lucas directed a PSA featuring Pamela Sue Martin to help save the pink dolphins of the Amazon.

In 1993, Lucas directed, produced and composed the documentary Time Machine: The Journey Back, hosted by Rod Taylor, with Alan Young, Whit Bissell, Gene Warren, Wah Chang, Bob Burns and Michael J. Fox. It aired on PBS stations and was released by Warner Home Video on the DVD of the 1960 classic George Pal film The Time Machine. Winner of the Saturn Award & Telly Award. A special screening of TMJB was held at AFI, Washington DC celebrating the 100th birthday of HG Wells. Mr. Lucas was honored to have directed Whit Bissell in his last acting performance in the mini-sequel TMJB reuniting George (Rod Taylor) and Filby (Alan Young).

Lucas was interviewed for Starlog Magazine, about producing and directing "Time Machine The Journey Back."

In 1994, Lucas produced and directed the documentary The Avengers: The Journey Back, hosted by Patrick Macnee with Honor Blackman, Dame Diana Rigg, Linda Thorson and Simon Oakes.

Mr. Lucas directed Ethan Wayne (John Wayne's son) in a Warner Bros. Promo entitled "Print The Legend: The Life and Times of John Ford and John Wayne" plus, directing Tom Selleck receiving Harry Carey Jr's. "Dobe Award."

In 1995, Warner Bros., Harry Carey Jr and Clyde Lucas attended the Cannes Film Festival. They brought with them Ben Johnson, Carroll Baker, Dan Ford, Patrick Wayne and Claire Trevor to celebrate the 100th Birthday of Director John Ford.

2008, Mr. Lucas directed Mr. Spaceman: A Sci Fi Journey. Produced by Birgitta Johansson. Now airing on the Space Channel/Dragon World and the Bobbi & Clyde Network http://www.bobbiclyde.com.

As of this writing, Carey (producing) and Lucas (directing) are working on a new action western, titled Comanche Stallion.

Lucas is the president of the Argonaut Foundation, a group that restores motion pictures, TV series and soundtracks.

Lucas Hosted "Western Night" - SCV Film Festival Screening - 4/22/2007 -
The SCV Film Festival presented "Western Night" with a series of short films with Western themes, including "Yak's Last Ride" and "Bronx Cowboy" from 7th Voyage Productions, with filmmaker Clyde Lucas in attendance. Also featured was "Comanche" starring Kris Kristofferson, which was the last Western by Burt Kennedy, and "Tales from the Set" a promotional trailer hosted by Harry Carey Jr. -
