Collis St Hill

Lieutenant-Colonel Collis George Herbert St Hill (23 June 1865 - 8 July 1917) was a British Army officer in the Royal North Devon Hussars who fought in the Matabele, South African and Gallipoli campaigns.
Life
St Hill was born on 23 June 1865 to Rev. Canon Henry and Mary St Hill in Wellington, New Zealand. He was raised in an upper middle class family, his grandfather was Charles Sainthill of Bradninch Manor in Devon. He married the daughter of Rosie Maryon-Wilson on the 23rd June 1899 at Queen's Gate. They lived together in Beaufort Gardens in Kensington.
They had one daughter and one son:
* Colline Ammabel St Hill (1899-1985), married Michael Hanbury-Tracy in 1937.
* Hereward Maryon Sainthill (1904-1970) married Veronica Mansfield in 1940.
St Hill died in battle during the Great War in France on 8 July 1917. St Hill is notable for his role commanding 6th Lincolns at the evacuation of Sulva Bay in the ill-fated Gallipoli campaign the 2nd and 5th Sherwood Foresters at Villers Pluich. He was mentioned in Despatches on the 7th of November 1917 for his 'Gallant and distinguished services in the field'.
