Cold Pop

Cold Pop is a genre of music, derived from Indie rock and made by artists that are usually considered to be from the darker side of the musical spectrum lyrically, however, musically they are more pop oriented.
History
The exact origins are not know but are believed to have come from the Worksop / Chesterfield area of the UK, Miami, Florida or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in late 2007. The sound most likely developed in the US as a subgenre of indie rock then spread to the UK from Cold Pop bands touring England since the sound was more aligned with the social issues going on outside of the US. Many people credit Metropolis America as the first official Cold Pop band. This claim makes sense since the band was briefly based in Miami before making Philadelphia, PA their permanent home.
Characteristics
A subgenre of Indie rock and Indie pop, Cold Pop combines the melodic and rhythmic integrity of the indie rock movement while combining it with subject matter that has a specific social value to the listener. It is ‘pop’ in the effect of being very accessible to the average listener and ‘cold’ because it rejects the idea of pop music being easily consumable to the average listener. Cold Pop artists are known to be devoted to their audience and include interactive technologies into there releases and shows.
Sonically, Cold Pop songs usually maintain the same dark, cold vibe of the goth and dark wave bands’ sound but are just “pop” enough to catch on with a broader audience. The instrumentation of Cold Pop is usually at least one guitar, bass, drums, vocals and one or two keyboards/synths. The melodic content of the instruments being played is used as a more defining compositional style then a basic chord progression. Often these artists portray a cold, detached confidence which transfers well to pop’s equally confident attitude.
