Clearpoint Credit Counseling Solutions
ClearPoint Credit Counseling Solutions, also known as ClearPoint Financial Solutions, Inc., is a U.S. nonprofit organization headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. It provides counseling for consumers who need help managing credit card debt or may be entering bankruptcy.
Background
Known as ClearPoint Financial Solutions since 2005, the credit counseling provider was formed in 1980 and operated until 2001 as Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Virginia, Inc. In 2003 the organization merged with Solutions, Inc., of Seattle, Washington, and CDC Consumer Debt Counseling of St. Louis, Missouri, to form ClearPoint. In 2008 it began providing budgeting, housing and credit counseling services in all 50 states. ClearPoint has branch offices in St. Louis and Seattle and 35 satellite offices nationwide.
ClearPoint is a member agency of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), and a system-wide member of the Council of Better Business Bureaus (BBB). It sponsors a financial education section of the BBB's website.
Purpose
ClearPoint provides budget, housing and credit counseling services face-to-face, by telephone or via the Internet. Consumers with unsecured debt (mainly credit cards, or legal and medical bills) can seek counseling from the agency to help them manage their income, reduce expenses, and pay down outstanding debt. As with all credit counseling services, ClearPoint also negotiates with creditors on behalf of clients.
Operations
ClearPoint's work is supported through grants and individual contributions as well as contributions and fees collected from clients and creditors.
In 2007, ClearPoint began providing housing counseling for homeowners about to lose their home through foreclosure and those contemplating purchasing a home. In July, 2008, ClearPoint became a National Intermediary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, giving it formal recognition by the agency as a resource for housing counseling. The organization also is authorized to provide bankruptcy counseling for persons seeking Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy protection.
